Amid joyous Diwali celebrations two young people lost their lives in a tragic road accident that took place near Khanapara foot overbridge in Guwahati in the wee hours of Friday.

Two others also sustained serious injuries in the accident.

The accident occurred around 3:40 a.m. between two Mahindra Scorpios. The first vehicle, a white Scorpio (registration AS01EG-0820), was attempting a U-turn near the footbridge toward the Science Museum. The second vehicle, a black Scorpio (registration AS01GB-6269), was approaching Ganeshguri when it collided with the white Scorpio.

The impact caused the black Scorpio, driven by 22-year-old Deeepit Dey, to lose control, strike the foot overbridge, break through the railing, and overturn onto the road. Both Dey, son of a Christianbasti medicine dealer, and his friend, 19-year-old Kunamika Narzary from Joraguri in Kokrajhar district, died instantly.

Another passenger, 19-year-old Niharika Basumatary from Gohpur in Sonitpur district, narrowly survived but sustained severe injuries.

The crash left the black Scorpio a mangled heap of metal, casting a pall over Diwali celebrations in the city. The group reportedly wore entry bands from a nearby bar in Jorabat, where they had attended a party before heading out of Guwahati for a trip.

The black Scorpio had only been purchased on Tuesday, making the incident all the more heart-wrenching.
