SHILLONG: Mawsynram MDC Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie was elected unopposed as the new deputy chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Alvin was declared elected unopposed as the deputy chairman of the Council by the KHADC Chairman Pynshngainlang N Syiem during the budget session of the Council held here on Wednesday.

This was after the opposition Congress has decided not to field any candidate for the post. Earlier the Congress had also decided not to contest the posts of CEM and Chairman citing that they do not have the numbers.

The newly elected deputy chairman was escorted by the KHADC CEM Teinwell Dkhar, deputy CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem and other members to his chair.

Members from both ruling and opposition bench while participating at the felicitation ceremony extended their congratulations and urged the deputy chairman to be neutral while performing his duty.

Highlighting the importance of the deputy chairman’s post in ensuring the smooth conduct of the proceedings of the House, KHADC chief Teinwell Dkhar said, “The deputy chairman should at all times refrain from being bias.”

Chairman of Council PN Syiem however pointed out that the duty of both the chairman and deputy chairman should be as per the AD rules.

He also pointed out that it was interesting to note that two important posts are being held by a former Mawsynram MDC and the newly elected member of the constituency.

Speaking on the occasion, Alvin sought the cooperation and support of all the members and assured to perform his duty as per rules.

“I agree that I have to keep the party uniform aside and I assure that I will try my best to perform my duty as per the AD rules,” Mawsynram MDC said.

Earlier, executive member (EM) and MDC from Jaiaw Paul Lyngdoh said that Sawkmie being a young leader can become a great source inspiration to youth of the state and expressed confidence that he would work hard to uphold the dignity of the Council.

In line with Paul, opposition member from Mylliem Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that it is a matter of great pride that the Council is producing young leaders like Alvin to take up such responsibility.
