All 5 accused produced in court; police seek 10 days to probe Sohra murder

The state police has sought ten days police custody for interrogating Sonam Raghuvanshi and four other accused, who were produced before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) on Wednesday, for their involvement in the recent murder of a tourist from Indore, Madhya Pradesh Raja Raghuvanshi at Sohra.
“Interrogation will start very soon once we got the police remand. We are asking 10 days police custdoy (but court granted 8 days) and if require more, we will extend our request for remand,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters.
“All five accused have been remanded to 8 days police custody,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters.
Urging the need to refrain from any speculation, Syiem said, “We haven’t got our remand out here yet let us not speculate. There are so many things. Preliminary interrogation and investigation were done in those states; they may have divulged something but these things need to be confirmed and corroborated and needs to be backed with evidence.”

Asked, the SP said so far only five have been arrested in the murder case.
“As investigation progresses, we will be able to ascertain whether only these people were involved or other people involved,” he added.
On the reconstruction of the crime scene, the SP ruled that the five accused will not be taken to Sohra tomorrow as they will have to examined and interrogated first.
“Not tomorrow yet. We have to examine them first. Once the examination has been finalised, statements are recorded, we get to the facts of the matter then SIT will be decided the date when they will go for reconstruction of the crime scene,” he said.
Further, Syiem said that Sonam’s medical report does not indicate that she is pregnant.
“Yesterday, a thorough check-up was done on Sonam at Ganesh Das hospital and it appears negative (and that she was not pregnant). Again, they will recheck her after 24 hours,” he said adding “Not them, just her because Ganesh Das is a woman related hospital and neonatal treatment is there so best thing we had taken her to Ganesh Das. There were lots of speculative reports (about pregnancy) but safety and safeguards have to be taken when we take custody to ensure her health is of utmost importance.”
According to the SP, the other four accused persons are examined by a registered doctor only in Sadar police station. They can be examined by any government registered doctor.
Asked, Syiem said, “Please give us time after interrogation we will be able to give the exact sequence of events of the incident.”
“Once we get the fact of the matter and after we interrogate then we will take them to Sohra.
Whose role exactly what was his role we need to ascertain. After we ascertain the role of everybody then we do the reconstruction of the crime scene,” he added.
Further, the SP said that investigation just started and only after that police will know if there are others involved in the case.
“Of course, she (Sonam) was involved. Confession can be given only in court. After interrogation we will be able to know to what extent her involvement and ascertain details of her involvement, “he said while adding the “thorough plan” will be ascertained after interrogation.
On the law-and-order aspects of the case, the district police chief said all preventive measures are being taken.
“People of Sohra are not violent. I have said earlier when there were such negative narratives they continued to help in the search and continued to provide information and they cooperated and cook food for the search team and I don’t see any threat but nonetheless people will take preventive measures,” he added.
