    Minister In-charge of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, AL Hek, inaugurated the long awaited Modern Bi-Species abattoir in Demthring village, West Jaintia Hills District on Tuesday. The ceremony was attended by Amlarem and Jowai legislator Lahkmen Rymbui and Wailadmiki Shylla. Also presence were Dr. H K Marak, Director of the AH & Veterinary Department and Dr. DI Kjam, District Veterinary Officer, Jowai.

    During the event, Minister AL Hek expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated abattoir would ensure the production of hygienic processed meat. He urged the butchers to cooperate and maintain cleanliness, acknowledging the initial challenges and emphasizing the importance of a positive and constructive attitude in this journey.

    In his keynote address, Deputy Director (Planning) of the Directorate of AH & Veterinary, Dr. WMW Khongwir, mentioned that the Modern Bi-Species abattoir has the capacity to slaughter approximately 50 cattle and 100 hogs per day. He highlighted that the construction work started in 2014 and the butcher house at Demthring was initiated in 2012-2013, funded by the National Agricultural Bank for Rural Development (NABARD), with a total project cost of Rs. 7.83 crore.

    Other speakers at the event included Lahkmen Rymbui, Wailadmiki Shylla, Limba Dkhar (President of Jaintia Cattle Butchers’ Welfare Association), Boldness Ryngkhlem, Secretary of Ka Sein Ki Nong Ah Doh Sniang Jaintia Hills, and Elword Ryngkhlem, Rangbah Shnong of Demthring Village.
