The opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Monday slammed the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government for its apathy against illegal stone quarrying in the state.

“Dangerous: Illegal stone quarrying in Meghalaya. CM @SangmaConrad, How can you permit this? You are destroying the beauty of the Hill State and putting People of Meghalaya at risk. You will be held accountable,” the AITC Meghalaya said in a statement.

The party said that despite repeated directives from the High Court and the National Green Tribunal regarding the illegal stone quarrying in Meghalaya, the misappropriation of natural resources continues at its own pace.

“In various parts of the state, the hills are being illegally mutilated to source stone which are then illegally transported,” it said.

“If the destruction does not stop, the state of Meghalaya would very soon be in literal ruins. Is there an answer to why CM Conrad Sangma is allowing Meghalaya to be sold off in stone chunks?” the party asked.

The AITC further said that the CM’s hands would be bloodied when the extremely unsafe and unsupervised stone quarrying results in fatal accidents among the locals.
