The opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has accused the Conrad K Sangma-led state government of failing to ensure safety and security of women in the state.

“The inept CM Conrad Sangma fails to secure the respect of women in Meghalaya’s venerable tradition of a matrilineal society,” said the AITC in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Stating that crimes against women are increasing in the state, the opposition said Meghalaya had a statistics of 568 reported cases of crime against women in 2020.

“CM Conrad Sangma has been consistent in maintaining the criminal graph, since even in 2022, rape cases are taking place all over the state. In a state where women have large stakes and participation in social structures, the incidents of crime against women are abominable,” it alleged.

Condemning the attacks against women, the AITC however said, “Time and again, the MDA government has failed to secure a safe state for women in terms of safety and protection.”

It said it’s high time that the CM breaks his silence on this grave issue.

“Raping a woman is a rhetoric of power, and who else but the State Government can take the onus of ensuring that the power is not free-flowing into criminal hands?” the party stated.
