The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) Central Executive Board on Sunday reiterated the demand of setting up Winter Capital or Second Capital for state of Meghalaya in Tura, West Garo Hills District.

The demand was made by the AHAM-CEB delegation in a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

The memorandum highlighted on the other long pending exigencies of the Garo Hills region and the Achik Nation with special emphasis given on the Winter Assembly/ Second Capital in Tura.

They said that these demands have been long pending demands of the people of Garo Hills and the vision of the fore fathers of the Meghalaya State Movement.

AHAM reiterated to the Chief Minister that the Winter Capital/Second Capital in Tura remains the aspirations of the people of Garo Hills and until the demand is met the true status of equality in development and justice will remain a distant dream to the people of Garo Hills region as well as the State Movement leaders from Khasi & Jaintia Hills region as well.

AHAM fervidly rejects the idea of setting up of mini secretariat in Tura in place of Winter Capital/Second Capital in Tura.

They apprised the Chief Minister that the demand for Winter Capital will not cease till it sees the light of day.

Apart from other issues, AHAM discussed with the Chief Minister on influx in Meghalaya- Assam borders in West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.

They also informed on the existence of the dual voters in the Rajabala and Phulbari areas.

They urged the CM on the need for stricter and vigilant force especially in the areas bordering Halidayganj where A·chik residents are being tortured and attacked by illegal mining mafias from Assam day in and day out.

Sangma assured the organisation to look into the issues and exigencies put forth.

He also commended AHAM for conveying the genuine demands of the people of Garo Hills.
