SHILLONG: NPP Tura MP Agatha K Sangma on Wednesday met Union home minister Amit Shah to reiterate her demand to exempt Meghalaya and the North eastern region from the purview of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019.

Agatha was part of the delegation of MPs from the NE region which include Congress MP from Shillong Vincent H Pala.

The union home minister assured the delegation that he will look into the demands and call back for further consultation.

Agatha’s move was seen as a sort of damaged control after anti-CAB groups protested against her decision to support the passing of the CAB in parliament.

Effigies of the woman parliamentarian from Garo Hills, was also burnt in several areas across the state on Tuesday.

The opposition Congress has also termed the U-turn of the NPP as the biggest betrayal to the people of Meghalaya in particular and the region in general.
