SHILLONG: The district administration of East Khasi Hills has promulgated section 144 CrPC prohibiting assembly of five or more persons within a radius of 2 km of Motphran and Harijan colony.

The order was issued by the deputy commissioner Abhishek Bhagotia on Thursday following information received that the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) will be carrying out inventory survey and pasting of official notices in Harijan colony tomorrow.

Stating that the given date of the survey is exactly one year since the break down of law and order and the occurrence of riot in Motphran and Harijan colony, Bhagotia said that he is of the opinion that some vested interest or anti social elements may take advantage of the sensitive and volatile situation during the survey thereby affecting the law and order and disruption of peace and tranquillity in the area.

The order also strictly prohibits any person or group of persons from obstructing any vehicular movement in the area around Motphran and Harijan colony.

It also prohit carrying of arms and any other lethal weapons or any other item having the potential to be used as a weapon which can likely cause grievous injury or harm to any person or persons.

Earlier this month, the High Level Committee headed by the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong had directed the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to again start the inventorization in the form of issuing public notices.

The Committee had also decided to give a month’s time to the settlers at Them Iew Mawlong to submit documents to prove that they are residing in the area legally.

The exercise was necessitated in view of the fact that the settlers had refused to cooperate during the inventory conducted last year, where most of their houses were under lock and key.

It may be mentioned here that the HLC was constituted by the state government to find a feasible solution for the relocation of the Sweeper’s Colony from Them Iew Mawlong.

The violent agitation started following an exchange of words between a bus driver and a lady residing at Them Iew Mawlong on May 31, last year over the parking of a bus.
