The Meghalaya High Court on Monday directed that the State not to withdraw the additional measures taken during the just concluded Behdienkhlam festival as it has helped ease the garbage problem in Jowai town.

“Perhaps, the additional measures taken during the Behdienkhlam festival may have helped ease the garbage problem in Jowai,” the Division Bench said in its order after hearing a PIL filed by the Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Jowai.

“The additional measures should not be withdrawn and both the Municipality and the local administration should, in conjunction with the headmen, ensure the smooth functioning of the garbage disposal system, including the trucks which have been engaged as of now,” it added.

The Bench has also directed the State to report on the progress, particularly as to the construction of the permanent waste disposal system which was due to be commissioned by the end of this year.

The next hearing will be held on August 14.
