Five days after he resigned from the party, Congress MP from Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, Abdul Khaleque withdrew his resignation letter following a meeting with Sonia Gandhi in the national capital on Wednesday.

Khaleque had resigned from Congress citing various reasons, primarily blaming the party’s leadership.

Abdul Khaleque held discussions with former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Khaleque met Congress general secretary KC Venugopal in Delhi, after he resigned from the party.

Following his meeting with Sonia Gandhi, Khaleque, said: “I wish to state that I had tendered my resignation on March 15 due to non-addressal of my grievances by the APCC president and and AICC in charge of the state. But I am glad that the central leadership of the party reached out to me because of which I could have a fruitful discussion with KC Venugopal ji, and later had the blessing of our honourable CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi ji.”

“As a sitting Lok Sabha member and two-times MLA I understand the situation in the country. It is the duty and responsibility of every democratic and progressive person to strengthen the democratic forces,” Khaleque said.

“Strengthening Congress is the need of hour, hence I withdrew my resignation and wish to work under your and Rahul Gandhi’s able leadership,” he added.
