AAP Assam demands immediate government action amid rising Japanese Encephalitis deaths

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Assam, has voiced serious concern over the ongoing outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis in the state, which has claimed 24 lives and infected over 250 people so far. In a state-wide initiative, AAP submitted memoranda to all Deputy Commissioners on Wednesday, urging the government to launch an immediate and effective response to control the disease.
In a press statement issued by the party, AAP Assam’s state general secretary (organisation) Rajib Saikia criticised the state Health Department for its alleged failure to respond adequately to the public health crisis. He said that despite the rising death toll and infection count, there have been no visible efforts by the government to contain the spread of the disease, particularly in vulnerable rural areas.
Saikia alleged that essential preventive measures such as anti-mosquito fogging, spraying of insecticides, distribution of medicated mosquito nets, and public awareness campaigns have not been carried out. He described the absence of these basic interventions as a sign of gross negligence and irresponsibility on the part of the authorities.
Calling for accountability, Saikia demanded the resignation of Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal, holding him directly responsible for what he termed a failure to safeguard public health during a preventable outbreak.
The memorandum submitted by AAP Assam outlined several urgent demands. These include immediate fogging and insecticide spraying in all affected and high-risk areas, wide-scale distribution of medicated mosquito nets, and a state-wide public awareness campaign through printed leaflets, loudspeaker announcements, and public meetings. The party also called for immediate financial assistance to families who lost loved ones to the disease, improved medical care for current patients, and the organisation of health camps in rural areas for screening and treatment.
Saikia also expressed gratitude to AAP’s district-level workers and volunteers for coordinating the memorandum drive and supporting communities during the ongoing health emergency. He reiterated the party’s commitment to standing with the people of Assam and holding the government accountable for what he described as a failure to act in the face of a growing epidemic.
