JOWAI: Two persons including a fireman were arrested for their involvement in raping minor girls, who were recently rescued from human trafficking racket by the West Jaintia Hills District police.

They have been identified as Khroolan Nongrum (41), a fireman posted in Fire and Emergency Services Station, Jowai and Lekipaia Phawa (31), district police chief Lakador Syiem said on Monday.

Nongrum is a resident of Khimusniang while Phawa is from Riatsiatsim, Jowai.
Syiem informed that both the accused persons have been forwarded to court, which has remanded to judicial custody.

According to the SP, the arrest was made based on the statements of the victims and other evidences.

Earlier, as many as 10 people were arrested in connection with the human trafficking ring unearthed by the district police on June 2.

“A total of 12 persons have been arrested in connection with the case so far,” Syiem said while informing that investigation is still on to nab the others involved in the racket at the earliest.
