97th death anniversary of Kuki freedom fighter Pu Chengjapao Doungel observed in Karbi Anglong

The 97th death anniversary of Pu Chengjapao Doungel, one of the tallest freedom fighters of the Kukis and a central figure of the Anglo-Kuki War (1917–1919), was commemorated on Thursday at the KRA Peace Camp, Manja. The event was organised by RGOK/KRA Assam.
The programme began with the National Anthem, followed by floral tributes and a ceremonial salute from KRA cadres in honour of the revered leader, popularly remembered as the “Kuki Raja.” The observance was chaired by Pu T. Hanging, PRO, while the welcome address was delivered by Pu J. Robert Hangsing, Chairman of the organisation, who urged all to uphold the memory of Doungel’s visionary leadership and courage.
The Anglo-Kuki War, often described by the British as the Kuki Revolt, was a determined struggle to defend ancestral land and freedom. Pu Chengjapao Doungel led his people with unwavering spirit, alongside other prominent leaders such as Pu Lhukhomang Haokip, Pu Khotinthang Sitlhou, Pu Tintong Haokip and Pu Enjakhup Kholhou. After the war, Doungel was exiled to Sadiya, where most leaders were imprisoned for three years. As the chief leader of the resistance, he was sentenced to four years. Despite exile and hardship, his legacy endured, earning him lasting respect as the “Kuki Raja.”
The commemoration was attended by a large gathering that included CSO representatives, pastors and dignitaries. The programme featured a prayer by Upa Hensei, Chairman of KWC, a special song by Ng. Chochong Guite, and a keynote address by Paolal Hangsing, Chairman of the Kuki Human Rights Forum, who stressed the importance of remembering such visionary leaders. A special condolences prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. S. Singson, while the programme concluded with a benediction prayer from Pr. Haopu Simte.
On his 97th death anniversary, the Kuki community paid tribute to Pu Chengjapao Doungel not only as their leader but also as one of the unsung heroes of India’s freedom struggle.
