As part of the Chief Minister’s Students Digital Learning Scheme, tablets (M-TABs) were distributed to Higher Secondary students of East Jaintia Hills District during a programme held at Khliehriat West Community Hall on Thursday.

Organised by the District Administration in collaboration with the Department of Education, the event was attended by Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla, Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi, Additional Deputy Commissioner J.U. Kharpuri, Assistant Commissioner F. Wann, District School Education Officer A. Syiem, and others, including teachers and students.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Kyrmen Shylla urged students to make the most of the digital tools provided and emphasised the importance of education, discipline, and hard work in shaping their futures. He also acknowledged the role of parents in guiding their children’s academic journeys.

Deputy Commissioner Awasthi highlighted the government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and underlined the importance of digital learning, particularly in the post-pandemic era. He stated that the tablets can be used not only for academic studies but also for skill development and exploring career opportunities. He also advised students to use technology responsibly and be aware of the risks associated with social media.

The Deputy Commissioner further mentioned other educational initiatives undertaken by the District Administration through DMF funds, including the introduction of smart classrooms and soft skills training programmes for students.

Earlier in the day, Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla distributed tablets to another group of students at the same venue. Drawing from her recent experience at an Artificial Intelligence conference in Belgium, she spoke about the increasing relevance of technology in education and encouraged students to use digital resources wisely.

A total of 800 students from 13 Higher Secondary Schools in the district received tablets. The devices are preloaded with educational content tailored for Arts, Science, and Commerce streams.
