Eight persons have been arrested by the police special investigation team (SIT) for their alleged involvement in the assault incident at Golflink which led to the death of a youth from Wahkaji village in South West Khasi Hills district last month.

Pherlangroi Myrthong (20) succumbed to his injuries at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on March 28, a week after he along with his friends were assaulted at Golflink area on March 21.

“The SIT after ascertaining the culprits has arrested eight persons involved in the case who are tribals. They will be taken into custody for ascertaining more facts into the case,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said in a statement issued on Friday.

The SIT is headed by SP (City) Vivek Syiem.

Earlier, NGOs have outrightly rejected the claim made by the state police that the culprits involved in the assault incident at Golflink are not “non-tribals”.
