    Along with the rest of the country, the 78th Independence Day was celebrated in East Jaintia Hills District at a function held at the playground of Khliehriat Higher Secondary School, Khliehriat wherein Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Sniawbhalang Dhar hoisted the Tri Colour and took the Rashtriya Salute of the 28 parade contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police, Home Guards &Civil Defence, NCC, Scouts &Guides and students.  

    The celebration featured the enthusiastic participation of government officials, students and community members.

     During the celebration, prizes were handed over to the winners of the Cultural items Competition in which Khaddum Cultural Troupe was announced as the Winners, KB Memorial Secondary School, Wapung was adjudged First Runner Up while Oxford Secondary School, Ladrymbai was adjudged as the Second Runner up.

    Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the March Past Competition wherein Oxford Secondary School, Ladrymbai was adjudged as the winner while JNV (Girls), Rymbai was the runner up.

    Other highlights of the celebration include a friendly football match played between Government Officers and School Teachers of East Jaintia Hills District at East Jaintia District Sports Association Football Ground, Dienchynrum and gifts were also distributed to inmates of Shelter Homes at Khliehriat and 7Tyndai Child Care Counseling Centre, Tuber Kmaishnong.
