Ri-Bhoi Police on Tuesday night arrested five members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) for allegedly extorting money from tourist vehicle drivers.

The accused were identified as Donboklang Kharbani, President of HNYM Nongpoh Circle; Sparly Syngkli, Chairman of the Anti-Influx Cell; Aiborlang Marbaniang, Working President of Nongpoh Circle; along with members Krius Pariong and Ricky Tangsang.

Police said the arrests followed a complaint filed by two tourist vehicle drivers, who alleged that HNYM activists had demanded sums ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,500 per vehicle. The accused reportedly posed as conducting checks on outsiders before demanding the money.

Police produced the five arrested persons before the District Court in Nongpoh on Wednesday. Investigation is underway into possible further cases of extortion involving the arrested HNYM leaders and members.
