A misunderstanding during a purchase of liquor has led to the injuries of three persons after they were beaten up by a group of people belonging to a non-indigenous community at Jatalong village under Block-II in Ri Bhoi District.

The incident took place on Friday night.

Ri Bhoi ADM MB Tongper along with the district police immediately rushed to the village to take stock of the situation.

Speaking to reporters, Tongper said the incident is not at all related to any communal clash between two communities. In fact, it has taken place due to a misunderstanding between two groups of people on the purchase of liquor on Friday night.

“There is nothing communal in this incident as it was related to the purchase of liquor by three men last night. However, there was a misunderstanding as they were bargaining,” he said.

He informed that police from both Meghalaya and Assam are on the spot to ensure the incident does not escalate. “Police are searching and I think they have managed to nab them,” Tongper said while informing that a case has been registered.

Stating that Meghalaya and Assam are in the process of resolving the areas of difference, the ADM said this matter will also be resolved as he emphasized the importance of ensuring peace and tranquility in the area.

“This is a small incident and there is a need to ensure that it does not go out of hand. Now the first thing to do is to close down these liquor shops,” he said.
