  • 3 candidates file nomination on day one, KHADC has 9.96 lakh voters, JHADC 3.12 lakh voters

    A total of three candidates filed their nomination papers on the first day for the upcoming elections to the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, to be held on February 21.

    All the three candidates are from constituencies under the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

    These are sitting National People’s Party (NPP) MDC from Laitumkhrah-Malki Fantin Joseph Lakadong and two independent candidates – Dr OS Jyrwa from Sohryngkham constituency and Daniel Wahlang from Mawsynram constituency.

    According to official sources, none of the candidates from the other four districts – West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi – under KHADC and two districts – West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills – under JHADC, have filed their nomination during the first day.

    Meanwhile, the notification calling the district council constituencies to elect members to the KHADC and JHADC was published today by the district council affairs (DCA) department.

    The two ADCs have a total of 13,08,818 voters of which 9,96,518 voters (515247 females, 481268 males and 3 third gender) are from KHADC and 3,12,300 voters  (1,61,220 females, 1,51,079 males and 1 third gender) from JHADC.

    There are 2146 polling stations of which 1669 are in KHADC and 477 in JHADC.

    Section 163 BNSS order issued for deposition of arms and weapons

    The filing of nomination will be from January 27 to February 3 at 3pm and this will be followed by scrutiny of nomination. The last date of withdrawing the nomination paper will be on February 4 and the date of finalization of valid nominations and allotment of symbols will be on February 6.

    The date of polling will be on February 21 and counting will be on February  24.

    Carrying Rs 50,000 cash or above prohibited due to MDC election
