  • 3 arrested so far in Umpleng murder case

    Two more have been arrested for allegedly involved in the recent quadruple murder case in Umpleng village, which falls under East Jaintia Hills District.

    “So far three persons have been arrested (in connection with the four dead bodies recovered in Umpleng area on July 6),” district police chief Giri Prasad said on Monday.

    He said that the details of the arrested persons are not being disclosed in the interest of investigation.

    “Investigation is ongoing to trace and to arrest the other person(s) involved in the case,” the SP assured.

    On July 6, four persons were found brutally murdered with their heads severed in remote Umpleng village.

    According to police, the victims were also found with their hands and feet bound in the same place in a forested area in the outskirts of the village.

    The deceased persons identified by their family members include Ravi Rai (23) of Patha Elam, Nepal, Rajesh Rai (26) Koshi Anchal, Nepal and Nasar Kyndait (33) of Dkhiah East Pohshnong, East Jaintia Hills District. One body remains unclaimed.

    A criminal case has been registered with the  Khliehriat police station.

    Preliminary inquiry into the case has revealed that the four deceased persons were suspected to be drug users and small time peddlers.

    “These persons (victims) were drug users and they are also suspected to be some small time drug peddlers. This is what preliminary investigation has revealed,” DIG Eastern Range Davis NR Marak had said.
