The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Thursday disconnected electricity to several houses at Maxwelton Estate, Laban after they were involved in power theft.

The action was taken based on a complaint filed by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle with the Chairman of the MeECL on Wednesday (March 6).

The MeECL sent an official team for inspection to Maxwellton Estate and found that there is rampant power theft by the residents of the area, a statement issued by the KSU said here.

“It was found that from one single meter, power is being supplied to over 14 other houses and some to 4-5 houses. The MeECL has immediately disconnected power to these houses and will soon issue notices to such residents,” it said.

“Further, the MeECL also found that 27 houses which were having proper meters (20 postpaid and 7 prepaid) were also illegally supplying power to over 50 other houses. Accordingly, power has been disconnected to these 50 houses.”

Lauding the MeECL for taking swift action on the matter, the KSU said that it will again submit a memorandum to ensure that such residents cannot apply for power connection without producing valid documents and NOC from dorbar shnong.
