The Border Security Force (BSF) has seized a truck loaded with 20 cattle meant for smuggling to Bangladesh in East Jaintia Hills District.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the BSF troops at Sonapur observed a suspicious truck loaded with cattle. On trying to stop, the truck driver did not pay any heed and crossed the check post in heavy acceleration, the BSF said in a statement on Wednesday

BSF troops pursued the truck and later seized 20 cattle cramped in it, near Umkiang. All the cattle were tethered tightly with the rope presenting cruelty and the pathetic condition of the cattle.

The cattle were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh. Later, the truck and the cattle were handed over to the state police for further disposal, it said.

The statement further stated that there are chances of spurt in cattle smuggling in view of the upcoming festival of Bakr Id/Eid ul-Adha which is going to be observed in the last week of this month.

The festival is celebrated zealously in Bangladesh of which cattle sacrifice is an indispensable part.

In another incident, BSF personnel deployed in South Garo Hills also seized miscellaneous items including biri, shampoo, cream, soap & oil etc worth rupees more than ninety thousand, which later on handed over to customs department for disposal.

Meanwhile, DIG (PRO) UK Nayal said that the BSF despite the spread of COVID-19 and adverse weather conditions, is maintaining a high degree of vigil on the international border to assure national security as well as to prevent all kinds of illegal activities.

“BSF is making its best efforts to curb smuggling activities on the International Border and these efforts will continue,’’ Nayal said.
