  • 2 GNLA-R members arrested for extortion in East Garo Hills

    Two members of the Garo National Liberation Army-Regrouped (GNLA-R) were arrested in East Garo Hills district for their involvement in extortion activities.

    District SP SA Rynjah on Friday informed that police received a written FIR on March 18, to the effect that some unknown miscreants claiming themselves to be members of GNLA-R called the complainants from unknown number since March 15 demanding money from them along with threats of dire consequences if their demand is not complied with. A case was registered and investigated.

    During the course of investigation and based on available credible inputs, an extensive search operation was conducted by East Garo Hills District police.

    He said on March 21, one person by the name of Predickson N Sangma @ Ara (32) of Ambre A.ding Rongjeng was apprehended while he was proceeding to meet the complainants and receive the extortion amount at Rongjeng Forest Reserve.

    Subsequently, based on continuous operation, another member of the group viz one Setbingstar D Shira @ Negro (33) of Nongchram Dekmik was apprehended from Rongjeng Songma. Extensive operations launched to nab the remaining members of the group, he said.

    Meanwhile, the SP urged the general public to share information on any person involved in similar illegal activities to the local police station as and when such illegal activities are noticed adding that the identity of those who share the information shall be kept secret and will be suitably rewarded.
