The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday apprehended two smugglers and seized 97 cattle meant for smuggling to Bangladesh.

The cattle worth Rs 55 lakhs were loaded in 3 trucks which were intercepted by the BSF troopers deployed at a mobile check post at Sonapur Bridge along the national highway-6 in East Jaintia Hills district, BSF officials said.

BSF PRO, UK Nayal said of late, cattle smugglers of both sides are trying to strengthen and augment their smuggling activities across the Indo-BD border.

Taking a proactive action, BSF troops deployed at border have intensified their vigil to foil nefarious activities of smugglers, he said.

The 444 kms Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrain provides ideal conditions for cattle smuggling.

The alert BSF troops are devotedly engaged in curbing this menace which post lockdown has suddenly increased in Meghalaya, Nayal said.

BSF has stepped up its special drive against the illegal intruders and has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminals to maintain tranquility in bordering areas of Meghalaya, he said.
