The Joint Action Committee of Dong Namchiang (JACDN), Elaka Narpuh, East Jaintia Hills District on Tuesday issued an ultimatum to the Meghalaya Government and the NHAI for repairing and restoring the deteriorated National Highway 6 along the District within two weeks failing which they will resort to indefinite closure 2.0 of the National Highway 6.

The JACDN comprised eleven villages namely Ratacherra, Dona Umbluh, Dona Skul, Umkiang, Lumphyllut, Lumsoski, Pyrtakuna, Borsara, Kuliang, Shymplong and Tongseng under 6-Sutnga Saipung Assembly Constituency, East Jaintia Hills District.

National Highway 6 could be regarded as one of the busiest highways in the North Eastern region as the highway connects Tripura, Mizoram and a portion of Assam and Manipur. There is heavy movement of loaded trucks transporting construction materials, essential commodities amongst others besides passenger buses and light motor vehicles etc.

Informing media persons regarding the ultimatum, JAC Chairman Lasting Pala said that the road from Tongseng to Ratacherra -Malidor is in the worst pathetic conditions where potholes are more than the roads leading to frequent breakdown of vehicles along the Highway.

He also said “from time to time, we urged the NHAI/NHIDCL to repair the road but the reply we got from the two authorities is that they are constructing the side drains.”
