School children among crowd attending NPP’s rally in Killing despite ECI guidelines
The National People’s Party (NPP) has allegedly involved participation of school children during its election campaign at Killing under Jirang constituency in Ri Bhoi District.
A video, which is being circulated, shows that children in school uniforms were among the crowd attending the election rally.
The rally was addressed by the NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
The presence of school children in the NPP’s rally was despite the guidelines of the Election Commission, which instructed political parties and candidates to refrain from involving children in any form of election campaign.
The ECI in its advisory to all political parties, had maintained a zero tolerance stance on the use of children in any election-related activities and said that they should not involve children in any manner, including “holding a child in their arms, carrying a child in a vehicle or in a rally”.
“This prohibition extends to the use of children to create the semblance of a political campaign in any manner including use through poem, songs, spoken words, display of insignia of political party or candidate…,” EC said in a statement.
