The 3rd edition of the YAI North East Regatta 2025 kicked off onMay 25 with vibrant sails and youthful energy at Umiam Lake. Organized by the Umiam Sailing Club and UDAY Sailing Foundation, the regatta is held under the patronage of the Yachting Association of India and supported by the International 420 Class Association of India.

Running till May 29, the regatta is a key event on the Junior National Ranking calendar and plays a significant role in selections for the National Squad ahead of the 2026 Asian Games. This year, 79 sailors from 9 leading sailing clubs across India are competing in 5 categories and 11 classes, including 25 women and 9 novices—showcasing the sport’s growing inclusivity.

In his address as the Chief Guest, Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, AVSM, Vice President of the Yachting Association of India, expressed admiration for the growing momentum of sailing in the region. He stated, “The focus on creating a professional yet sailor-friendly environment has set a new benchmark for regional regattas in India. It is this kind of care, vision, and attention to detail that elevates an event from being merely good to truly exceptional.” He also expressed his delight that the Umiam Sailing Club had fielded 13 sailors, making it the third-largest contingent.

Dr. Vijay Kumar D., IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of the Department of Tourism and Chairman of the Umiam Sailing Club, emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing sustainability, tourism, and sporting development. He revealed that a permanent space has been earmarked at Umiam Lake for sailing and rowing facilities, in preparation for the 2027 National Games.

To ensure fair play and international standards, the regatta is being officiated by International Judges, Race Officers, and a National Measurer.

The event not only celebrates sporting excellence but also reflects Meghalaya’s broader vision of developing Umiam as a hub for recreation, tourism, and competitive water sports.
