The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Building Byelaws, 2021, which seeks to increase the utility of land in Secretariat Hill and European Ward area to 60 percent.

Addressing media persons, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the building byelaws has been made applicable in the Secretariat Hill and the European Ward Area.

“Therefore, maximum permissible plot coverage area for public and semi public buildings in the Secretariat Hill and European Ward area will be increased from 50% to 60% and similarly for mixed used buildings also it will be increased from 50% to 60%.

This is being done with a view that the land are very scarce in these areas and hence the utility of the land needs to be increased,” he stated.

Further, Sangma added, “…when it comes to alot of public spaces including projects like the Ward’s Lake project and other tourism projects that we are building up, we would like to see that maximum utility of the land is made. So with that objective we are allowing and amending the Meghalaya Building Byelaws in these specific areas.”
