MeECL employees to stage work boycott on August 10

Employees of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) under the banner of the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) will observe a one-day statewide work boycott on August 10.

The decision was taken as a mark of expressing solidarity with the ongoing agitations across the country launched by the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) against the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2021 that the central government has listed for tabling in the Parliament during the monsoon session.

In a letter to the MeECL Chairman-cum-Managing Director, RV Suchiang on Thursday, CCORMAU president PK Shullet said, “As a mark of solidarity with Electricity employees in the country and the NCCOEEE, the constituents of the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) accordingly resolved to adhere to the decision for a nation-wide strike by observing a state wide work boycott by non-factory workers of MeECL (on August 10).”

The NCCOEEE which is a nation-wide federation of employees in the power sector, had announced its opposition to the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2021, having  perceived the adverse consequences the bill will have on the power sector.

In continuation of its letter to the Prime Minister of India dated July 16, wherein the NCCOEEE had made clear its stand against the proposed bill, the NCCOEEE confirmed through its formal notice of strike/work boycott issued on July 27, and circular dated August 3, the decision to hold a one-day nation-wide strike/boycott on August 10, he said.

Shullet also assured that essential services will be maintained and that power supply shall not be hampered, to the extent possible.
