At least two persons have lost their lives and three others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents on Friday, as Meghalaya continues to face adverse weather conditions. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has directed all departments and authorities to remain on high alert and take necessary measures to minimize the impact of the situation.

The deceased have been identified as Klosliya Kharkongor (50) from Lumkyntung Village under Laitkroh-Khatarshnong Block, who died in a landslide, and Samborlang Tariang (35) from Mawbynna, Pomlakrai, who drowned.

Instructions have been issued to the respective Deputy Commissioners to release the ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.

According to official reports, over 1,023 people across 25 villages have been affected by incessant rainfall. At least 12 houses and 25 public infrastructure facilities, including school buildings, have been damaged.

In view of the ongoing heavy rainfall and squally winds across the state, a review meeting was convened by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma with all Deputy Commissioners.

Sanjay Goyal, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, briefed the Chief Minister on the current situation, preparedness measures, and actions taken by each district, along with updates from calamity reports.

During the meeting, districts reported incidents of landslides, flooding, waterlogging, fallen trees, damage to infrastructure, and disruptions to utility services. The IMD Regional Office has forecast that the inclement weather is likely to continue till May 31, 2025.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) are actively monitoring the situation, with emergency response teams on the ground.

The Chief Minister reiterated the need for all agencies to remain vigilant and ensure timely response to any emergencies.

The public has been advised to stay informed, remain cautious, and take all necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of severe weather.
